Last year my husband, Bob, made a Bluebird house for our backyard. Before long, a house wren began taking nesting materials into it. It was fun watching him (or her?) take long, thin twigs in and then take them back out. (Were they too big to fit?) Once they had things just right, they began serious nesting.

Before too long, he would go out and back, bringing something (small caterpillars?). He did this repeatedly, which entertained us as we ate our meals. With binoculars on the table, we had a perfect view of their activities. (Sure beats watching TV!)

“Then came the day that a tiny head appeared in the round opening—hesitant, peeking out, until at last it found the courage to fly.”

As you may know, wrens are very vocal, so they call attention to themselves. It was very difficult to ignore them, which made it more fun for us. It seemed to us that the calls were more intense once the eggs hatched. The flights in and out were almost non-stop.

And then came the day that a head appeared in the tiny round hole in the bird box. It seemed very hesitant, pushing out a little and pulling back, until it got up the courage to fly. We nearly cheered!

This whole sequence of events gave us many days of joy.
