Plants In the Garden

The Habitat For All Garden at Valentine Farm is composed of an eclectic mix of herbaceous perennials, annuals, bulbs, vines, shrubs and a few trees. The goal was to create a densely planted space that envelopes you with the feeling you have entered an unmanaged wild space. With literally thousands of plants to choose from, our selection is based on the following concepts:

  • All plants are aesthetically pleasing and perform one or more functions (food resource, provide shelter, different bloom time, etc.) in the garden.

  • The plant mix includes some familiar favorites - Rudbeckia, Echinacea, Penstemon- and many  plants unfamiliar to many - Crocosmia, Adlumia, Pycnanthemum, Tithonia - in the hopes of building demands for these beauties and pollinator magnets.

  • The garden is a mix of natives, nearly natives, and non-natives. There are no known invasive species in the garden.

  • The garden is approximately 70% perennial and 30% annual and is constantly changing.

Where To Find Plants & Seeds

In addition to sourcing plants from local greenhouses, we scour the internet to find specialty nurseries for some of our unique plants. Here is a brief list of some of the sources of plants:
