About the event
Join us on Sunday, August 2, when the Persicaria tinctoria (Japanese Indigo) is at peak indigo production, to harvest the beds and do an indigo extraction. During our time together, you will learn how to extract the indigo precursor, making ‘mermaid water,’ and turn it into non-soluble indigo pigment, appropriate for vatting, paint making, and sublimating.
We will also explore fresh uses of indigo, including stenciling, vatting, and salt mash on silk.
Indigo artist Rebecca Zicarelli, will have a small quantity of dye blanks available for purchase to do this workshop. You can source your own from Port Fiber in Portland or on-line. We recommend PFD (prepared for dyeing) silk scarves blanks, for making precious robbins egg colors; the only methods for making this color from natural sources. Or feel free to bring your favorite cotton or silk shirt (clean, no fabric softeners) to upcycle with indigo tie dye.
