Monarch Tagging
As part of our mission to "conserve and share the Mahoosuc regions' important natural lands with our communities", the volunteers at the Habitat Garden tag monarch butterflies as part of Monarch Watch.
Monarch Watch is a nonprofit education, conservation, and research program that focuses on the monarch butterfly, its habitat, and its spectacular fall migration. The data collected from tagged butterflies are used to understand the fall migration.
Over 1000 monarchs have been tagged at Valentine Farm since 2020. Two tagged butterflies were recovered at the El Rosario Preserve in Mexico.
Monarchs in the Habitat Garden
Each year from late July through September, monarch descend in huge numbers on the flowers in the Habitat Garden. These individual monarchs, which weigh about as much as a paperclip, fly 2,500 miles from Maine to Mexico, to spend the winter in monarch preserves. While at the garden, volunteers carefully place uniquely numbered tags on the hindwing of monarchs. The date the butterfly was tagged and its sex are recorded on datasheets that are sent to Monarch Watch. In Mexico, volunteers recover tagged monarchs and report the tag numbers to Monarch Watch. Two monarchs tagged at our garden have been recovered in Mexico!
