Buck's Ledge Community Forest
We made it! The Buck's Ledge Community Forest Celebration and Dedication was held on Saturday, October 15, 2022. Thanks so much to everyone who contributed to permanently protecting this community jewel.
What is Buck's Ledge Community Forest?
One of the area’s most recognizable geographic features, the iconic granite face of Buck’s Ledge rises from the eastern shore of North Pond in Woodstock, a magnet for hikers, as well as artists and photographers.
The Community Forest encompasses 634 acres, including Buck’s Ledge, Lapham Ledge, and the summit of Moody Mountain. The parcel, already well-known for hiking, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and other traditional uses, includes rare plants, old growth trees, and nesting habitat for peregrine falcons. Nearby, nesting eagles and loons are often seen and heard as well.
The trailhead parking lot on Route 26, which is maintained by the Town of Woodstock, provides convenient year-round access to recreation opportunities, including six miles of hiking trails which lead to views overlooking local ponds and extending to the Presidential Range in New Hampshire.
A recently developed connecting trail from the Woodstock Elementary School allows students to make use of the forest as an outdoor classroom.
Who are our partners?
The Woodstock Conservation Commission partnered with Mahoosuc Land Trust, the Forest Society of Maine, and the Northern Forest Center. This collaboration allowed us to make use of each organization’s expertise, energy, and resources to attain our goal.
