Aerial photo of the Rumford Whitecap Mountain Preserve

Rumford Whitecap Mountain Preserve is a 751 acre undeveloped track that includes the summit and south slope of the Rumford Whitecap Mountain (elevation 2,214 ft). It is located in the town of Rumford. The Preserve includes about 132 acres of the open bald summit. Its open ledges provide outstanding 360 degree views. Rumford Whitecap is reached easily on foot. It is a local tradition to hike to the summit to pick blueberries while enjoying the view. No other summit in the region provides comparable views that are as easily accessible. The Preserve is also a destination for snow-shoeing and telemark skiing.

A portion of the bald top of the mountain, including the highest point, as well as some of the south and east facing slopes was purchased by the Mahoosuc Land Trust in the spring of 2007. Whitecap was acquired through the generosity of over 500 donors, and grants from the Land for Maine's Future's Board and five charitable foundations. The Mahoosuc Land Trust is very proud of its work to conserve Rumford Whitecap. It is the organization's largest project in terms of acreage conserved and funds raised to date.

Rumford Whitecap Mountain Preserve is only accessible by foot. Two trails start across the road from the parking lot located on East Andover Road in Rumford and are two to two and one half miles long. Part of the open bald top of the mountain is privately owned. Please respect the private property rights of these abutting landowners.
