Stewart Family Preserve

The Stewart Family Preserve, in Newry, Maine, comprises 485 acres of mountainous terrain which includes the three summits of Puzzle Mountain. The Preserve is intended to offer the public recreational hiking opportunities as well as to protect the unique character of the mountain's ecology.

The Stewart Family Preserve was acquired by the Mahoosuc Land Trust in 2005, a gift of Bob Stewart of Cumberland. Bob is an active outdoorsman, businessman and philanthropist who has worked for the last decade fulfilling his dream of building the Grafton Loop Trail. He has climbed Puzzle Mountain literally hundreds of times and brought dozens if not hundreds of others with him. The land trust is enormously grateful.

Much of the Stewart Family Preserve is in "old growth forest" with ledge outcroppings and stunning views of Grafton Notch and the surrounding countryside.

The Stewart Family Preserve is accessible only by the Grafton Loop Hiking Trail.

The Mahoosuc Land Trust is studying the possibility, in conjunction with the Grafton Loop Trail Coalition, of constructing a trail that will connect all three summits. This trail or system of trails, if constructed, will be accessible only from the Grafton Loop Trail, and should open up some very exciting terrain.
