Intervale Gateway

Hay harvest at Intervale Gateway Preserve

On the southeastern approach to the village of Bethel, along Route 26, the Intervale Gateway protects a panoramic view of the Mahoosuc Range, as seen across the Androscoggin River. Preservation of this historic vista was a principal goal of the Mahoosuc Land Trust when the land became available for sale in the mid-1990's.

At one time a part of the Intervale agricultural land stretched along the river, the Gateway is still cut for its hay. Reminders of the land's agricultural past include a farm pool fed by ground water, apple trees, and a stand of plantation pine.

Mahoosuc Land Trust plans for the property are to maintain it as a hayfield. However, because of the land's proximity to Bethel village, and to the Bethel Recreation Path, plans are being developed for construction of an interpretive path on the land at a future date.
